Description: According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), serious mental illness is defined by those who are age 18 and above who have at any time during the past 12 months, a diagnosable mental, behavior, or emotional disorder that causes serious functional impairment of a major life activity. In 2014, there were approximately 10 million adults with a serious mental disorder within the past 12 months. Those affected are more likely to be unemployed, arrested, and/or face inadequate housing compared to those without mental illness. In 2014, about 21.5 million Americans age 12 and older were classified as having a substance use disorder within the past 12 months.
