This interactive one-day training provides behavioral health and counseling professionals with practical, evidence-based strategies for identifying and responding to suicide risk. Participants will learn how to recognize warning signs, understand risk and protective factors, conduct suicide risk assessments, and determine appropriate intervention responses for individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Special attention will be given to the connection between substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health concerns, and increased suicide risk.

The training will explore best practices in suicide prevention, crisis response, safety planning, referral pathways, and follow-up support. Participants will also examine how substance misuse, overdose risk, trauma, isolation, and behavioral health challenges can increase vulnerability to suicidal ideation and behaviors. Trauma-informed and person-centered approaches that strengthen communication and engagement with individuals in crisis will also be discussed.
